Gloria & Eduardo Arquimbau

Gloria and Eduardo Arquimbau have instructed and inspired Chicagoans for many years and are recognized and applauded all over the world as the “living legends” of Argentine tango. We were fortunate to host them at our 2007 festival and will be honoring them this year for their 50 years of profound contributions to tango.

The Arquimbau’s career as tango dancers, instructors, choreographers and directors of tango shows began in 1960 in a tango show at the Cine Teatro Opera. Since then they have taught, performed, choreographed and directed tango dance companies and shows in their native Argentina and all over the world, including North America, Central and South America, Europe and Asia. They have worked with the most famous and renowned tango composers and orchestra leaders and have participated in different capacities in television shows, the movies and tango shows, including “Tango Argentino” which brought the passion of the tango to audiences on Broadway and other major stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe, for many years.

The couple is well known for their early work as choreographers and headliners of the original cast of “Forever Tango” beginning in 1990. In 2004 they toured Japan with “Alma de Tango”, the show they created, directed, choreographed and danced in, and presented it at Michelangelo tango dinner club in Buenos Aires.

An appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, along with Louis Armstrong, and a US tour in 1967 expanded their fame to North America and helped make them an international success. During their career they have made countless appearances on Argentinian and international television and in 1986 appeared again on US television on the Merv Griffin Show.

Eduardo and Gloria are the perfect picture of milongueros; they grew up with tango and began dancing at very young ages and their movements and dance style show it. They teach traditional tango, or primitive style, including the milonguero style they helped popularize. From them you will learn to dance like an Argentino, in the preferred style of the crowded milongas in Buenos Aires.

As they celebrate 50 years together in tango, they continue to inspire new tangueros with classes in Buenos Aires, where Eduardo is the president of Asociacion De Maestros, Bailarines Y Coreografos De Tango Argentino (AMBCTA).

This year they will serve as co-choreographers for the new show, "Argentina Tango On Stage", contributing their experience and artistic talent to special numbers for the show.
