Sabrina & Ruben Veliz
Sabrina y Rubén Véliz began their artistic career as cast members of the well known Ballet Brandsen in 1989. For the next eight years they performed with this company in some of the most important venues of Argentina and also toured South America.
In early 1997 they started their career as a solo couple appearing in presentations with Adrina Varela, Argentino Ledesma, Maria Volonte, Pascual “Cholo” Mamone, the Gigi Dángelis Orchestra, Ricardo “chiqui” Pereyra, El Quinteto Real, Hugo Marcel, Cuarteto Volpe, Orquesta Color Tango, Sexteto Canyengue, Ernesto Baffa.
The couple has toured all over the world performing and participating in tango festivals, including the Festival de la California and Festival de la Mohenda in Brazil, Tango Festival Menton in France, Fivizzano Tango World Festival in Italy, London Tango Festival, Tango Fiesta Prague, sitges Tango Festival in Spain, Tango Magia in Amsterdam and the New York Tango Festival.
Sabrina and Rubén have been directing and choreographing their own shows for 10 years. In 2008 they toured China with their show “Radio Latina” and introduced their show, ¨Abrazame¨, at the Menton Festival in France. They opened “Tangos Corazonicos” in 2000 at the Santa Maria (Buenos Aires) theatre and presented “Radio-grafias” at La Viruta in Buenos Aires in 2006.
In addition to choreographing and directing their own shows, they have also choreographed, performed in and toured with scores of other tango shows: Tango Emoción; Tango Buenos Aires” produced by Mario and Daniel Celario; “Tango Emotion” directed by Mora Godoy; “Piazzola Tango”, directed by Milena Plebs; with Miguel Angel Zotto’s company, “Tango x 2”; “Tangos Mitos”; directed by Anibal Pachano and Ana Sans; “Corazon de Tango”, directed by Ruben Cuello and choreographer Milena Plebs; “La Esquina Homero Manzi” and “El Club del Vino”, and “Tango, una Historia” at the "Plaza Hotel", New York. Last year they toured Japan with the Momoco Aida orchestra and Holland with the Amsterdam Sinfonetta presenting their latest choreography with music by Osvaldo Golijov, ¨Last Round¨(a tribute to Piazzola).
During the 2006 Soccer World Cup Sabrina and Rubén were featured in a TV ad for Solo Tango Channel and made a television special together with the Sexteto Canyengue in Holland.
In 2005 they were fortunate to be selected to choreograph a special tango for the 25th anniversary of the reign of Queen Beatrix of Holland. They presented this unique piece, “Gallo Ciego” with live music by the Canyengue sextet, in a televised performance in the presence of Queen Beatrix and the royal family.
In their teaching they emphasize the elegance and the fundamentals of the dance, making sure that their students understand the body mechanics, the artistic composition and the dynamic communication of the tango movements and dance structure.
Sabrina & Ruben are the current choreographers and artistic directors of the newest and most powerful tango show, “Argentina Tango, On Stage”, premiering in Buenos Aires the first week of August. After opening in Argentina, they will start their first US in mid-August, continuing through early September, including a performance during the International Chicago Tango Fest.
