Tango combats Diabetes The silent killer
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States.
Since 1987 the death rate due to diabetes has increased by 45 percent, while the death rates due to heart disease, stroke, and cancer have declined.
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy:
-At least 21 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated
-15 million have been diagnosed with diabetes
-7 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.
-The prevalence of type-2 diabetes is nearly two times higher among Latinos than among non-Latino whites.
-Approximately 24% of Mexican Americans in the United States and 26% of Puerto Ricans between the ages of 45 and 74 have diabetes.
-Latinos suffer from diabetes and its devastating complications at much higher rates than the general population, they are:
- 2.5 times more likely to undergo lower-limb amputation
- 2 times as likely to suffer from diabetes-related blindness
- 5 times more likely to experience kidney failure which would require dialysis or transplant for survival Diabetes The silent killer
Many people first become aware that they have diabetes when they develop one of
its serious and life-threatening complications such as:

The innovative dance and movement therapy techniques we employ are based on the powerful art form, the Argentinean tango.
Recent studies are indicating that the effects of diabetes, are lessened and, in several cases prevented, when the individual with diabetes or with propensity to diabetes participate in regular physical activity as part of their regimen.
Movements used to dance the Argentinean tango have been proven to reduce the risk of developing higher glucose levels.
The American Diabetes Association and the American Tango Institute are partnering up to promote this innovative campaign to combat this disease.
